Visiting with Gandhi

I’m in Switzerland speaking at a gathering of hundreds of diplomats and world leaders on being an evangelical and working with the larger global community in engagement and faith relations.  I’m a bit of a novelty here – many attending these types of gatherings do not have the best perception of evangelicals.  Some of that is due to misunderstandings and some is warranted.  I had great visits at supper last night with Ambassador Wilde - in charge of the program, David Glass - a Jewish leader who helped found the Shass Party & government minister - I liked him a lot!  What was extraordinary for me was sitting by Rajmahon Gandhi - lecture extraordinaire, humanitarian and grandson of Ghandi of India. Some things he said:

What books do you like best?
I love reading the Bible it is a balm for the soul.
Really?  I read that Gandhi loved it as well and read regularly/daily from it?
It’s true -
Do you?
Most days.  It touches me in a place in my soul. I love the gospels and the Sermon on the Mount and the Psalms.
Did you know E. Stanley Jones?
Of course and I’m good friends with his daughter Eunice.
He has impacted me dramatically?
Yes, I can tell in listening to your Spirit.
Anyone else you read?  I love Thomas a’ Kempis and Tolstoy.
How do you reconcile monotheism and polytheism?
I believe in one God - there is only one God - we call him many names but he is one….

Hope u can make sense of this - typing from iPad

Here is one thing, as we look to the Global Faith Forum, I wish all my friends had the opportunity to visit with those outside their tribe and global leaders.  I’m convinced so many global leaders don’t get the faith world - but religious leaders don’t get the world.  How can we be salt and light if we don’t?  How can we communicate?  Do we have anything to learn from the rest of the world or do we just naturally have all the answers?  What an incredible time to be alive. What a responsibility to live in this world. God give us not just the passion of Peter - but the love of John and the intelligence of Paul.

Wondering your further thoughts and comments on his statement, "I believe in one God - there is only one God - we call him many names but he is one…?"

What do you think about that statement? To me this is the crux of the problem that people have with the mulifaith dialog. That we don't clarify our distinctives clearly enough. As a Dutch Christian, I have seen what not being clear about our beliefs has done to the church in general. I personally would disagree with his statement though I would love to have a conversation with him regarding our differences.
