Trust and Obey Today
Trust and Obey Today

I was reading Hebrews this morning, and reflecting on the great cloud of witnesses that I know that have walked by faith. Some of those are listed in Hebrews 11, and others are not listed. They are countless friends, relatives, and disciples I’ve know through the years. As I reflect on their lives, I am reminded of the uncertainty of tomorrow, and the call for living in complete surrender today. Hebrews speaks of my Savior’s faith that is available to me in the moment of my weakness, doubt, and worry.
Hebrews 4:14-16 says, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
One of my old professors, Dr. Garland, would say,
“Today is all you have, all you need, and all you can handle.” The older I get, the more I realize the deep wisdom of these words.
This call for “Today” is a call to live in total surrender and obedience to my Savior. As the old hymn says,
Trust and obey for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus
Than to trust and obey.
Whether you are a church planter or single mom, true rest and peace comes only by walking in His Spirit. Christ is all I have, and all I need. I can handle that truth for today.

Brian, I'm sure you would want to know how much of impact that quote had on Avery Wood's life. He used to talk about how he always remembered you quoting Dr. Garland, and would often re-quote it. God bless.

Drew - Avery's example as a loving husband, friend, and disciple of Christ will live for generations. He sure impacted me. Avery's life shows that the message of Christ is simple, but the implications of one man or woman's obedience are countless. It's great to see you and many others from that group in Florida walking under Christ's love.
