The Difference Between My Local Church and The Global Church
First of all - there is no “my church” it is all his church and it is one church. There are two dimensions to church, though, that should be understood. One is the local church that each person is a part of and the other is the universal church that we are all connected to.
Most of us focus and live within our local church - so that becomes our primary definition of church. The question is how does a local church connect in healthy ways to the global church? It’s connected as the body of Christ - but I don’t think we know how to relate or how they are different.
How are they different?
They have different metrics of impact - whereas attendance, giving, and outreach may be the primary indicators of a local church impact - the global church measures community engagement (hopefully transformation) and church multiplication.
They are different in leadership. I would say leaders frankly are more aggressive globally - BUT also more humble. That is what balances it out and makes it work.
They are far simpler in how they communicate (not simplistic) and what they view as mature disciples.
They live far more on the edge than we do - from persecution to having to trust God for daily needs.
They don’t feel inferior or look to the West as they used to - though they are respectful and wanting to help us.
How do we relate?
Move from viewing ourselves as primarily givers to the global church to receivers from the global church of what God is teaching and doing, that we should practice here.
Move from viewing the global church as weak and needy, to seeing it as vibrant, alive, active, moving and incredibly powerful.
Move from thinking only church growth and Sunday event-ism, to living kingdom engagement for the whole body of Christ.
Move from seeing the world through Western eyes, media, and lenses to seeing it from the perspective of the developing world, and how followers of Jesus in those countries view things.
