The Changeless Inner Core
The stock market is open - Congress is not.
We spiral on the brink of something we haven’t seen in 75 years - a potential depression - I’ve been hearing about it on the news from all of these academics and economists. Who’s right and who’s wrong? How can we know from where we sit. People we’ve entrusted governance and leadership to are very partisan and self-centered. No wonder both our Presidential candidates are spouting change - we all know it needs to happen - but who is there and where is the moral fiber needed to speak and lead us out of this mess. . . . . .
We are running out of gas.
Just a matter of time now until it’s all gone. Our grandchildren will run their cars on something else - but what? In the meantime, because of the lack of invention and creativity the price for a gallon of gas will continue to rise destabilizing US and global economies . . . . .
War is everywhere.
Not just ours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Burma, Congo, Sudan, Lebanon, Georgia not to mention people groups like the Saharwi, Kurds, Palestinians and others. Who can mediate these things?
The American dream is in foreclosure.
I drive up and down the roads of my community and see the for sale signs. Sad reminders of families who’s economic pipeline ran out. I pass by houses seeing little kids outside playing - knowing some of them have parents sweating bullets not knowing if they’ll be next either from their poor financial decisions or some banks or some stock broker somewhere.
Our self-centerdness and greed have now come full-circle and we are paying for it. It may take a generation to fix this - probably will. This will require a new approach - one that produces a new kind of person - which requires a new kind of parent. Adults aren’t made overnight - they require a good solid 20 years of being poured into from their parents- another 20 years of learning to succeed and fail at the same time to get to a point of significant leadership in their 40’s. Financial success can come quicker - but not maturity and depth of character.
I’m not so sure a “President” can lead us out of this - we need “Ghandi” or a “Mandella” or something we haven’t seen yet. BUT, Peter Drucker once said, “Those who handle change the best are those with a changeless inner-core.” I think he’s right. Wars, economies, and other things have come and gone, been up and down - but people who know who they are stay stable and don’t panic with the whims of society. Their hope is not in power or money - but truth and relationships.
How do you feel today? It’s an indicator of where your hope is.

Good word. There always seems to be some kind of societal dilemma that is going to take down civilization as we know it. I wonder if these dilemmas coincide with the cycles of our economy. Drucker is right it is the inner core.

Bob,
Very well put. Bob, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the "behind the scenes" part of all this. i.e. "What is God doing?" If this does indeed cause us to rethink our living, downsizing to a sober lifestyle of "having", etc. This could be a good thing in the end. Your thoughts?

You and I were running around Lake Huan Kiem in Hannoi a few years ago. When we were down, we sat down and I asked you, "why doesn't communism work?" Your response, "never undersestimate the power of human greed." That response haunts me. Thanks for helping me process through all of this.

We need Yahshua, savior and Lord, not “Ghandi” or a “Mandella"...So what goes on in those CFR meetings?

Bob--Wow! I was just talking to our team here in Vietnam about this. We are watching something happening that we've brought on ourselves. We've been building on a platform that was always shaky at best. And...we're trying to regain our footing on the same kind of foundations. Talk about foolish builders.
You're right....something totally new is needed....something totally different to our world. And the difference is ancient-- The KOG of bust. Kingdom people. Kingdom foundations. Kingdom communities. As the foundations of this earth crumble around us....the true foundations of the King will be revealed.

The past few months - I've been starting my talks around the country with "Is the seed of the Gospel in and of itself, when planted in a person sufficient to transform that person? "Is it sufficient to transform a community? " The answer is yes - as long as it's the seed of the gospel of the kingdom, not just salvation.

I grew up believing capitalism is the best economic system possible. As a Christian, I have had my eyes opened to the truth that no system without God ultimately in the center is truly good. Unrestrained any man-made economic system - or for that matter political system will bow to human tendencies toward sin.
I think you paint an accurate picture. A couple of years ago the Lord started me on a journey to live simply. I now have to ask questions when I buy things like "Do I need this?" or "Do I just want this."
I have been blessed. But I now see myself as not the receipient of God's blessings (though I am) but as a conduit. I've been able to give far more generously - whether to my church, the homeless, or others God directs me to help when they are in a pinch.
About a year and a half ago, God just kept putting the words on my heart from scripture "everything that can be shaken will be shaken." I believe he began with the church (which is not finished by the way), and now he is moving to the nation.
I am at peace. I believe the Lord will preserve me. I believe what is happening now is redemptive. I believe he is giving the nation the opportunity to see what it has become and giving people the opportunity to repent.

Northwood is at an awesome place right now with wrapping up "Ruling the Roost", and Intentional Parenting discussions that just got started, and where our nation is today. What does it take to provide ourselves and our kids with love, a Kingdom of God vision and a servants heart, yet even more importantly, what are we doing to share with/demonstrate this to our kids?
Here’s a visual picture that’s constantly on my mind as we try to raise our kids. I place two suit cases on the table in front of you. One is filled with the character of society today, absence of; parenting, stewardship, moral character/courage, but yet one that still has an ounce of hope. The other represents the character of our children. My constant question is how am I helping them pack it? Am I proividing their inner core with Christian principles (understanding Salvation, Sermon on the Mount, the Gospels, 1Corinthians 13, Romans 12, Galatians 5:23, etc, etc, etc….) ? When they bump into societies suit case (of you know "stuff"), can they recognize the wrongs and cling to what is right? Am I demonstrating these things in such a way so they know these principles do not bend or sway in the face of popular, yet “un-Christlike” opinion? In essence, am I helping them make that inner core, changeless? Am I encouraging them to use this character to go out and make a difference? It will take our generation to begin to, but theirs to fix this mess......

Bob said,

I agree completely. I was at a meeting of local ministers talking about problems in our community and one of them said that what we needed was to get more people "saved." I leaned in and responded that I am now convinced that getting people "saved" has absolutely zero affect on our communities and the world - if we do not also teach people what getting saved really means. The only gospel that Jesus ever proclaimed was the Gospel of the Kingdom. Why are we proclaiming the truncated gospel of personal salvation and leaving out the Kingdom? We should proclaim the latter without neglecting the former.
Good words, Bob. I've been writing about this myself and I linked to you here.

In less than 36 hours I will be leaving Portland with a team from our church heading to Liberia for 12 days. This is the first foray into what we anticipate will be a long-term partnership in the region, a significant piece of which will involve encouraging and training pastors. Earlier today I received a list of questions they have asked for help with; four of the five areas focused on money (Biblical teaching, prosperity gospel, church and pastoral accountability for money, and issues of money between Americans and Africans). The other question was on the role of a pastor.
One thing I've been wondering since getting that list was how much of the present financial situation in the US can be translated into the current situation in Liberia - a country that was devastated by a 14-year civil war and is just over the past couple of years getting its footing again. Your prayers (and input) would be greatly appreciated.

Wow Randy - stay with the Scriptures - there has been a lot of "religious colonialism" that has taken place.
