Rule of Law and the LCD
Yesterday I did jury duty. There was a conflict with the first summons I got so they let me reschedule it. I got up early, drove down and went to the court house. There were many that were in line - no one was excited to be there - but neither were people rude, ugly, or angry to be there - it made me happy. It’s a process of your name being called then going into be interviewed by judges and attorneys to sit on cases and it takes a while.
I was “released” as a juror - there’s something about being a pastor I think that scares attorneys in particular. The case I would have been assigned to was a tragic one. I’ll be watching the news this week to see how it turns out. I couldn’t help but think of my brother and brother-n-law who are both attorneys.
I don’t always agree with or like some of our laws - but there is no place you see democracy more in action than with a jury trial - a group of your peers. What became apparent as we were all being interviewed was the disconnection between the lawyers, the court system and the people. If the people can’t get it, that’s bad. Made me think how that I as a pastor have to make sure what I say always come down to the grassroots level. People are the lowest common denominators, the LCDs, of society, of the church -it must all be for them or it can’t drive society as a whole.

My pet peeve is Christian's who try to use their Christianity to get out of jury duty and avoid their God given civic responsibility. Who should have a better balance of justice and mercy than a follower of Jesus? Let's serve with joy and a fervent celebration that we even have Rule of Law and are not at the whim of a despot.
