Keep Movin’  Forward Guys . . . .

“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heart-breaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”
—B.C. Forbes

Because NorthWood has grown and had a unique ministry and planted many churches I get lots of calls from young pastors dealing with different issues.  This week, I’ve fielded a few calls and even met with some guys.  One guy struggling with family issues, a couple with financial issues (hang in there guys - it’s tough for everyone but just remember God’s Kingdom economy is bigger than the US economy), and a couple with leadership issues in their church dealing with negative people.

I deal with all that stuff too - don’t kid yourself.  I learned many years ago everyone does.  Doesn’t matter how big or small they are, house or building, it’s just all part of it.  There are days I want to quit - just like anybody else - buy a cabin in Colorado by a stream, hide out, run naked with a spear through the woods . . . !!!!

I don’t know of a single leader that at times hasn’t had enough and wants to quit.  In a church, you never can and never will please everyone - it’s just impossible.  That’s why you have to do what’s right and do it for God.  Better to make someone angry following God than trying to follow them.  I’ve also learned, some people are always upset about something - so if you appease them in one area, it won’t be for long, there will be another issue.

As I was doing my personal worship this morning I read 2 Chronicles 15:2 . . . “Listen, all you people of Judah and Benjamin!  The Lord will stay with you as long as you stay with him!  Whenever you seek him you will find him.  But if you abandon him, he will abandon you.  3.  For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach them, and without the Law to instruct them. 4 But whenever they were in trouble and turned to the Lord the God of Israel, and sought him out, they found Him.  5.  During those dark times, it was not safe to travel.  Problems troubled the people of every land.  6 Nation fought against nation, and city against city, for God was troubling them with every kind of problem.  7 But as for you, be strong and courageous, for your work will be rewarded!  . . . 16:9 The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”

It just doesn’t get any better than that.  Read that slowly and reflect - claim that as yours.  Move forward leader, plant your feet firmly and clearly.  Have courage - everything is gonna be OK.  Just seek God.  Victory is on the way.  God wants to fulfill his will, it’s not your work, but his.  He planted those dreams - if anything, the difficulty will strengthen you and serve as a lesson to be remembered as you move forward.  Often, those hard times serve as “stones” on the Jordan to remind people where we came from, and where we aren’t going back to . . .

When I started out in ministry, I thought when God moved, so did everyone else - and everyone would always be excited.  That just isn’t true.  Sometimes, God moves most in the swamp.  There’s almost a relationship between the more God moves the more warfare and challenges you can expect.  Be strong little brothers and sisters . . . . keep ‘em chunky legs movin’ . .  . . we’re all in it together

Thank you for the encouragement, I can clearly relate to the financial and leadership issues, and I recently read that passage too… I miss our meetings on Wednesday, but keep reading the blog every day… Thank you messenger from God.

Great encouragement Bob. It helps to be reminded that our circumstances do not dedicate God's calling, presence, and activity. I was reading Acts in my worship time today. Acts 20:24 jumped out -
"I don't care about my own life. The most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me--to tell people the Good News about God's grace."

Victory is ours because we are about His work.

Thanks for the insight and encouragement, Bob - and for the evidence of your commitment to spiritual disciplines. Last night I was working on an assessment of those in my own life (for a class at seminary), and was rather discouraged with what I saw. This passage in Chronicles is a good reminder of the incredible importance of staying close to God. (BTW, I still want to talk with you about your disciplines. I sent an e-mail to your Northwood address...the day you went to DC, I think. Call or e-mail if you have 15 min to spare!)

    Bob--

Thanks for taking the time to write this blog. I always need to hear that and I'm meeting more and more guys that need to hear that from guys like you.

BTW--I'm in North Carolina this week (at Ridgecrest doing small groups training, talking about transformation, the KOG, etc) and I passed by a guy at a coffee shop and he was reading The Multiplying Church. We chatted for a little while. He's pumped...inspired....getting ready to order your other two books. It was so cool to meet another person infected with the glocal bug. Keep writing for us Bob.

Bob- I'm fairly sure there are ordinances here in Colorado that might prohibit your running through the woods naked, but maybe if you hug a tree or two along the way the park rangers will overlook you!!! grin

Thanks for the encouraging words today!

    Well said!

We have an expression among some friends when in spiritual warfare. If your are facing opposition, then the chances are "Your name is on the chalkboard of hell." We must also remember that the evil one is never able to take hold of us without our Father's permission. It is in these trials that we become stonger. There is always going to be an escape but the true challenge is being obediant by seeking His presence and direction. It is in these difficult times that character and spiritual muscle is built. It might be difficult today but there will be a day or time when you will truly learn that there is great joy in the pain. That is when true victory and freedom is "complete". Ask for wisdom during your prayer time, He will be abundant in giving it to you. Ultimately, we are not in control and He will bring everything to frutition without us or with us. It is a priviledge to serve, it is usually when we fall into the trap that we are probably more important to the situation than we really are that the burden becomes heavy. It isn't ours to carry which is a humble piece of pie we have to carry on daily basis.

Enjoyed the kind reminder of persistent faith. I always grow and I'm challenged when I read your blog. Thanks for being consistent.

I need to tell you about a GREAT IDEA that a friend of mine has for engaging a community in south america. I believe we have it funded. Can't wait to bounce this off of you!

Love you. You're making a difference in all of our lives!!!

Such good stuff. I'm so grateful that i've had guys like you pour this stuff into me as a young guy. I get sucked into the trap of gaining man's approval, and seeking to meet man's expectations all to often. The struggle to seek the approval of God by resting in the grace of Christ is a lifelong task in and of itself. Thanks for your guidance, and encouragement.
