Interview with 1st Generation Mongolian Christians & Pastors

I’m sitting here in Terelj, Mongolia and there is a hotel we can get WIFI at.  I’m with 3 first generation Christians and pastors.  Since the time of the Nestorians, there have been no Christians here until 1992.  I’m speaking on Kingdom, Disciple, Society, Church, and World to a select group of leaders.  I thought I’d interview them.

Was it hard becoming a Christian?  #1 Not at all, I saw the Jesus film and that was it, no one had ever told me.  #2 Not hard for me, either, I was searching for meaning in life, my dad had died and I was thinking deeply.  A friend who wasn’t philosophical or religious told me about Jesus and that was it.  #3 It was easy, I got the one brochure explaining about the Christ, I got it and read it, nobody explained – God himself touched me.  I got the brochure from a German missionary.  During Mongolia most were atheist, my mom went to temple and prayed and nothing happened, but it did at church.

How did you know God wanted you to be in vocational ministry?  It fell in my lap – I was a leader, and the pastor moved, at the church I was at, so I continued his job.  #2 My 3rd year into college my original dream was to be a diplomat and God said not diplomat but assignment – I heard the audible voice and that voice became the anchor.  #3 God’s presence was strong and I wanted to commit myself to God, I wasn’t seeking it, but God sought me and I did it.

What is it like being a 1st generation Christian here in Mongolia?  #1 Confusing because don’t know exactly what a Mongolian legacy so we are setting the legacy for the next generation and tons of other Christian cultures – and many coming here so we are slowly finding our way.  #2 Opportunity for a start.  We have a lot of teachers come from around the world and they are jealous of us.  They say all kind of stupid things and traditions.  We are a fresh start without making the same mistakes.  For us a learning opportunity from others and doing the right thing from the beginning.  We don’t have to fix anything yet.  If we do something wrong the second generation will blame us – an opportunity and responsibility.  We also get to visualize our entire nation and become a mission active nation of the earth.  #3 Big blessing and big responsibility.  We have a challenge to see the big fruits and churches, but we want to see us go deep and see fruits in the next generation.

What is most unique about Mongolian followers of Jesus?  #1 The nomadic mindset – easy to move and mobilize (this is phenomenal for me).  #2 Mongols are skillful in languages and sinking into any culture – easy to adapt and adjust – flow with culture and language and like to travel.  #3 We can be a big missionary nation – we all have it.  We are ready to go everywhere, any condition – we know how to survive.  We are ready.  I went to the states and met a lot of American Indians, they love Mongolians.  In states there are 10 congregations, 100 in South Korea.  We are cowboys here – we especially want to go cowboy – you need to have cowboys to bring their rodeo here – all of Mongolia will come!!  DID YOU HEAR THIS TEXANS!!!!  They love their horses here a lot – so much they even eat them!  THEY ARE SAYING “WE WANT COWBOY CHRISTIANS!”  The favorite sport is basketball bring your basketball stars here!

OK guys – this a place I’d come to, but not to stay long – only to help them, because they are coming for all of us.  They are loud Asians, like Texans, they laugh a lot and enjoy life. “We are twice as big as Texas.”  Don’t get smart guys -

    hey Bob,
Dudley Hall sent you a message "Tell Bob to go hunt a big sheep in the high mountains of mongolia" I think they call them argali- Love the article, I guess Jesus uses different methods of evangelism to bring people to Himself. He knows exactly what every person needs.
