Inauguration Was A Celebration

Here are some more pictures of Ben and me in D.C.  We’re back now.  We wound up standing in line from before sunrise until 11:30 a.m.  at that point we gave up on our gate opening.  We found a place called Hamilton’s and watched from inside.  We could look out the window and see the mall from our seats.  I was disappointed we didn’t get in but there were security issues.  We saw everyone from Jesse Jackson to you name it.  John Jenkins did get in and sat by none other than “Spiderman.”  We FROZE ourselves to death!!!!!!  Fortunately, some really good meetings took place.  Ben is standing with Ralph Hall, one of the longest tenured congressmen from Texas.  Ben and I were able to visit with the first newly elected American-Vietnamese Congressman Joseph Cao!!!!!!  I had been planning on connecting with him so this worked out great.  He was super nice and a BAYLOR BEAR!!!!!!  I hope we get to do some stuff together.  He needs his office decorated so we’re going to send him some Vietnamese art.  We went out with my sister Sandy, she was working in Congressman Hall’s office.  All in all it was a great day.  We enjoyed it, cold and all.

It was ironic, the day before was Martin Luther King Day and President Obama and others were all out volunteering.  The next day was the inauguration. Martin Luther King had preached on racial reconciliation on the other end of the same mall where President Obama took the oath of office.  No doubt about it there were more African American’s there celebrating and I celebrated with them.  Regardless of which party people were, etc. being present for the inauguration of the First African American President was exceptional.  Now, my good friend Alan Hirsch, who challenged us to vote for our first African American President, when will Australia have it’s first Aboriginal Prime Minister?  Put up or shut up baby!! Just kidding - I love you Alan but I will never vote for you for President!

    Bob,
I deeply regret I did not know you were going to be in DC for President Obama’s Inauguration. Guess I should keep up with your blog a little better. I had plenty of company, but certainly nobody I am close to, nor anybody as fun to be around as you! I had been there since Wed. Jan 14, and certainly would have made time to get with you and Ben, prior to the big day. I know this is all hindsight, but bare minimum, I could have gotten you priority seating in the purple section. On the other hand (obviously impossible) you would have gotten a kick out of “shadowing” me and seeing some of the behind the scenes “choreography” in working a protection detail so enormous. (Although, I would have made you hang with me for the whole 22 hour workday! Yikes!) However, as always, I am convinced we were exactly where God intended us to be. I am thrilled that Ben got to share the experience with you. I would have loved to have had one or both of my daughters with me to experience such a sight. Although we were operating out of drastically different roles, I am grateful God allowed us the honor and excitement of being part of this monumental and inexpressibly special event!
